Inside the Walls of the Hostel

John Welshman will be giving a paper 'Inside the Walls of the Hostel', at the Centre for the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine, University of Manchester, on 28 May 2009. The paper explores the changing role of the hostel in postwar health policy, both for people with mental health needs, and those with learning disabilities. A longer version of the paper is available in Pamela Dale and Joseph Melling (eds), Mental Ilness and Learning Disability Since 1850: Finding a Place for Mental Disorder in the United Kingdom (Routledge, 2006).
