No previous knowledge of the period is required. The typical offer is AAA.

Combined Major Degrees

In most cases, the joint degree scheme will require that you study History and the other subject during your first year, and then combine four units in History and four in the other subject during your second and third years. You should, therefore, visit the websites for the other departments to find out what they offer that might be of interest to you.

This scheme, taught in collaboration with the Department of English and Creative Writing, offers an exciting approach to understanding English speaking cultures, allowing you to concentrate on British and American cultural history in particular. The typical offer is A(Eng Lit/Eng Lang & Lit)AA.

English Literature and History are subjects which complement and support one another on several levels. For example, if you are particularly interested in the Victorian era, you will be able to study nineteenth-century fiction in Engl203: Victorian Literature, and explore the culture that produced this literature in HIST280: The Victorians and Before: Britain, 1783-1970 and HIST281: Britain in the Twentieth Century. You can do the same with American literature and history with Engl204: American Literature to 1900, HIST270: The History of the United States, 1789-1865 and HIST271: The History of the United States, 1865-1989.

In Part II, you will typically take four units in History and four units in English. In English, there are two compulsory units: for Part I, you must take Engl100 and for Part II, you must take Engl201. See options available to you in Part I History, and for Part II History. See here for more details on the English options over the three years. There are few restrictions on your choice of subject, though please note that as a combined honours student, you will not be able to take the half-units in English.

The Department of English and Creative Writing is the admitting department, and you should therefore consult them about your application for admission.
