HIST204: The Origins and Rise of Islam (600—1250 AD)The aim of this course is to provide students with an overview of the political, religious and social history of the central Islamic lands (from Egypt in the west to Iran in the east), from the time of the Prophet Muhammad until the end of the Crusader presence in the Near East. Strong emphasis will be placed upon the diversity and fluidity of both Muslim identity and the nature and priorities of the early Islamic community. Students will also be expected to engage with scholarly debate regarding the source material on the period, both literary and material. Primary topics of study will include: Islam's place in Late Antiquity; the rise and fall of the caliphal dynasties; the evolution of political and religious authority; the cultural and political position of non-Arab converts to Islam; sectarianism; responses to the Crusades; the impact of the Mongol conquests; and Mamluk Egypt.
