HIST205: Byzantine and Muslim Sicily(535—1072)

In this complex, challenging and rarely studied area, key themes and weekly topics include introductions to the historiography of the region, geopolitical considerations, issues of periodisation as well as the Byzantine and Muslim legacy in the central and western Mediterranean. The rise and fall of Byzantine and Muslim power in both Sicily and south Italy are studied through the medium of both primary and secondary sources, with particular emphasis on the political, cultural, socio-economic dynamics of the region.
