HIST230: Film, Memory and the Legacy of the Spanish Civil War (1936-2010)

This module investigates twentieth-century Spanish history and its contemporary legacy through its representation in fiction films. The course starts investigating the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) in the context of the 1930s ‘Age of Extremes’ and contemporary developments leading to World War II. It then proceeds to study the civil war and the role played by film in processes of memorialisation up to and including the twenty-first century processes of ‘recovery of historical memory’. The course explores concepts of memory and memorialisation, as well as the intricate relationship between the different timeframes present in films: production, release and the time they purport to represent. Films to be studied include:

  • Sam Wood, For Whom The Bell Tolls (1942)
  • Alan Resnais, La guerre est finie (1965)
  • Helena Taberna, La Buena Nueva/The Good News (2008)
  • Mario Camus, La colmena/The Beehive (1982)
  • Guillermo del Toro, El laberinto del fauno/Pans Labyrinth (2006)
  • Victor Erice, El espritu de la colmena/ The Spirit of the Beehive (1973) or El sur/The South (1983)
  • David Trueba, Soldados de Salamina/Soldiers of Salamis (2003)
  • Pedro Almodovar, Volver (2006)
