HIST242: Shadow Architectures-Culture and Aesthetics in Vienna,Budapest, Prague circa 1900

The module introduces students to one of the most volatile and vibrant periods in the cultural history of Europe – the turn of the twentieth century. We will discuss art, music, architecture and everyday life, paying special attention to how modern society and culture were being forged. Underpinned by various artistic and cultural avant-gardes, the decades surrounding the year 1900 could be described as a laboratory for modern identity. This was especially thecase in Central Europe, with the city of Vienna at its helm. The overarching question at the time was how one should define modern society. In connection to this question, specific programmes and artistic movements were created, which attempted to bring about a change in the way one saw and interacted with one’s everyday environment. The module gives students a glimpse of this rich and vibrant culture of invention, to which Péter Hanák in the process of contrasting Vienna and Budapest referred as ‘the garden and the workshop’.
