HIST282: Digital History: Using Computers in Historical Research

Computers are becoming ever more important in historical research as more historical sources become available in digital form, and computers are increasingly able to manipulate, analyse, visualise and disseminate them. “Digital History” explores the ways in which historians can make best use of these resources and tools. This course provides an introduction to this rapidly developing field starting from the assumption that the student has only basic IT skills such as word processing, using email and browsing the internet. It introduces them to a range of software tools and approaches, and the issues and challenges of using them properly in historical research. As well as providing the student with an understanding of new ways in which historians are researching their discipline, these skills can be applied to other courses taken by the student, such as their dissertation, and provide transferrable skills that will help with their employability.
