HIST292: The Crusades I: Conquest, Colonization and Religious Enthusiasm 1095-1187

Frederick Barbarossa as a crusaderAt the end of the 11th century, western Christian armies began the conquest of the Holy Land from the Seljuq Turks. They were armed not only with the latest military technology but also with a theology of holy war. What impulses in western European society led to the Crusades, and how did the Islamic world respond to them? What kind of society did the crusaders who stayed behind after the 1st crusade establish alongside the new subject peoples? This course enables you to explore these questions, as well as looking at some of the major personalities of the crusades and the Islamic world in the 12th century.
