HIST293: The Crusades II: Conquest, Colonization and Religious Enthusiasm 1187-1330

Frederick Barbarossa as a crusaderAbout a hundred years after the 1st crusade established new western states in the Near East, Saladin conquered the kingdom of Jerusalem. This course looks at how the crusader states in the east recovered after this disaster, and examines the major crusades of the 13th century. Why did so many crusades fail? How were crusades organized, financed and led? Why was crusading extended to include other enemies than the Turks in the East? And why did crusading appear to go out of fashion at the end of the 13th century?
