HIST295: Nature and culture 1500-1750: Key Texts and Contexts

Title page of book on Magic by Giambattista della PortaThis module covers many of the dramatic changes in ideas introduced in Hist294. It is an independent module because you will study the changes through some of the most important books of the period (in translation). Marvel as the French knight du Bartas reconciles the pagan Greeks, Aristotle the philosopher and Galen the doctor, with the book of Genesis, and does it in popular verse. Raise an eyebrow as Della Porta, the most widely-read magician of the age, explains how to make a love charm. Decide whether Queen Elizabeth I’s doctor was the world’s first experimenter. Examine the grounds for the Roman Inquisition’s conviction of Galileo on heresy charges. Assess Isaac Newton’s arguments that a comet caused Noah’s Flood and will soon destroy the Earth. The focus on primary sources makes this module valuable preparation for your final year studies.
