HIST356: La Nouvelle Histoire: Twentieth-Century Historiography in France and Beyond

Special Subject (60 credits)

This module explores the extraordinary twentieth-century transformation in the way history was thought about and written. Many of these changes took place in France, and were centred on the Annales journal and the Annales School. Throughout this module, the Annales School will be used a case study of the ways in which historiography relates to the societies in which it is produced, and the ways in which historians debate, differ and innovate in terms of their methodologies and range of interests. This module explores new ways of approaching social and cultural history, the relationship between economies and societies, man and environment, and the cyclical nature of history whilst tackling new and complex subject matter such the history of climate, death, and crowd psychology. Having studied Annales historians in depth, the module will explore the ongoing legacy of exchanges between history, anthropology, psychology and other disciplines.
