SSM 4: The Black Death as Historical Problematic

The great plague that struck Europe in the mid-fourteenth century, killing between a half and a third of the Continent's population, can be regarded as the definitive pandemic. Study of its causation, its dramatic course and massive economic, social, cultural, religious and political consequences offers medical students fascinating opportunities to deploy their accumulating professional expertise, while acquiring University-level historical knowledge and analysis as the learning outcome of skilled tuition and close documentary study, aided by the resources of a rich 'secondary' literature.
