Ida Kristiansen, Bjørnar Hulbak and Silje Stridskleiv
The first week, was fresher’s week, and we spent it wandering around town (and campus) with a map in our hands trying to ease the confusion. To be honest we figured out what was where in town, before we figured out what was where on campus. But after a few days campus suddenly became more clear as well. Campus is a bit on the outskirts of town (approximately 15-20 minutes by bus), and spreads over a wide area. It takes you 10 minutes to walk from one end of campus to another. You have everything you need on campus, and could in theory choose to never leave, although we really don’t recommend it. But life on campus is very fun and social, so we would recommend that you try the experience of living on campus. When you have experienced what Lancaster (a genuine English town) has to offer, you can easily travel to different parts of the country by train. And relax; compared to NSB everything works like a dream. We have been here, at this point in time, almost eight weeks, and we have already experienced Manchester, Liverpool, London (2,5 hours by train) as well as the Lake District. It is also direct trains from here to Scotland if you are interested, and the ferry to Dublin is not far away either. If you are interested in English football you are in the centre of everything. Bjørnar claims that half of the teams in Premier League are in “near proximity”, which means about an hour away by train - (but Ida and Silje wouldn’t really know). And then to the reason why we are really here; the LLM degree. The modules are very interesting for students who are interested in the international aspects of law. You can choose between everything from business law, to the laws of armed conflict (humanitarian law). Where you at home would focus more on the interpretations of different articles of law, directed at solving specific legal questions, you are here more likely produce political views as well. There is much more focus on the interaction between politics and law here than at home. With small groups of students (6-20) for each module there is a much bigger interaction between students and the staff. The professors are inspiring and motivating, and their office doors are (almost) always open. You are also encouraged to stop by if you have any questions. Also we would like to emphasise the interaction with students from other countries. It is a positive for seeing problems from different points of view. Even though Lancaster is not such a big town, it is a town and a university that we highly recommend. The town is very student-friendly and the university has a good international environment. We have made friends from all over the world and we are looking forward to our further stay here. |
