Emilie SeckerAwarded PhD 2009 Emilie Secker gained a BA in Joint Honours History-Sociology at the University of Leeds, and in 2004 completed the LLM in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at Lancaster University. "I began studying for a PhD at Lancaster in 2005, focusing on the issue of participation in international human rights law. I receive funding for my PhD from the Arts and Humanities Research Council. I had always been interested in a career in law, but was undecided as to whether academia or practice was most appropriate to my skills and interests. I chose to undertake my PhD at Lancaster as the process of completing the LLM had led me to realise that I was far more attracted to the academic study of human rights, rather than the actual practice of law. I had thoroughly enjoyed studying for the LLM, in particular writing the final dissertation. I have found the Law department at Lancaster to be very friendly and welcoming, as well as offering a range of research experience in my field. The staff at Lancaster Law School encouraged me to continue to PhD level, and were enormously helpful and supportive during the application and funding processes. My two PhD supervisors have helped me immensely in developing my ideas, through constructive and challenging discussions. I would advise anyone beginning a PhD at Lancaster to take some of the faculty research training courses, as these can give a whole new perspective on your research plans. In addition, they give you the opportunity to meet other PhD students and share your experiences." |
