Law 205 - Grievances and the State

(Half Unit in the 1st Term)

This course is concerned with the control of government power in the modern welfare state. The government of the UK assumes responsibility in a diverse range of matters such as education, health, social services, housing, environmental protection, control of the economy, transport and so on. This involvement often results in conflicts arising between citizens and the state. Citizens who feel aggrieved at the decisions of administrators, Ministers and other agencies may seek to challenge these decisions and obtain redress. The course will examine legal mechanisms such as judicial review and tribunals, quasi-legal mechanisms such as the Ombudsman, the role of regulatory agencies and the impact of the Human Rights Act.
