Law 234 - Independent Socio-Legal Practice(Half Unit in 1st Term) ConvenorDr Israel Butler This module will run be run jointly by the Law School and the Lancaster
University Volunteering Unit (LUVU). Students will be placed by LUVU with
an organisation enabling them to work on socio-legal issues. This may
include (but is not limited to) work: with a Citizen's Advice Bureau as
an advisor (offering legal advice after receiving training) or within
the social policy forum (tackling social issues of local concern); with
a Youth Offending Team (participating in the rehabilitation of a young
offender); with local schools (running law workshops inside local schools
and in the university for local schools as part of a 'Streetlaw' programme).
Students will normally receive training from LUVU to prepare them for
the responsibilities of a work environment during term 1, and will then
be placed during term 2. The minimum time requirement for this module
is a placement of 10 weeks, with four hours per week at the organisation
in question, or equivalent. Placements made with certain organisations
may require a commitment from the student going beyond 10 weeks. Students
will be able to develop their teamwork and interpersonal skills as well
as learning how to deal with responsibility and use their initiative and
imagination. The module requires a serious commitment from students but
is immensely rewarding and enlightening.
