Law 236- EU Law, Social Policy and Citizenship

This course will examine the relationship between the EU and individuals through the idea of citizenship. Citizenship, as created by the EU, is based on rights to participate in the democratic process, as well as entitlements under EU social policy. Students will look at the state of democracy in the EU through the 'hidden' law-making processes, the role of lobbyists, and the role of the European Court of Justice in the formation of EU Law. Students will also examine a range of elements of EU Social Policy, such as the law relating to non discrimination and access to social security. The underlying theme of the course is whether the EU has evolved from a mere economic union, into a political and social community whether the concept of citizenship has a role to play in this.
