Law 261a: European Law

(Half unit in 2nd term)

This course is compulsory for second year students who have not taken Law 105 in their first year. It will give you a basic understanding of the European Community (EC), as part of the European Union (EU). The EC as a legal system operates differently to English law. The institutions of the EC, the way law is created and developed, the principles governing relations between the EC and its Member States, and the substantive law of the EC will introduce you to new concepts. The greater part of the course will focus on constitutional aspects of the EC, though you will also be introduced to substantive law relating to human rights, free movement of goods and competition law.

THIS COURSE IS AVAILABLE TO SECOND YEARS WHO DID NOT STUDY LAW 105 IN YEAR 1.

Assessment

Coursework: Case-note 10%, Essay 40%, Exam 50%
