Law 312 - Consumer Law

(Half Unit in 2nd term)

Law relating to consumers and their rights have been undergoing a rapid period of growth in recent years both within the UK, as well as at European level. This course provides an introduction to key areas of consumer law, such as that relating to the consumer safety, the sale of goods and services, consumer credit, trade practices and access to justice. There will also be a particular focus on developments at EU level in consumer law, and their consequent impact at UK level. A critical approach to the examination of law in this area will be taken, by reference to the social, political and economic context in which it has developed to date. It will be questioned as to where the right balance should be struck in protecting the consumer and what is the best mix of civil, criminal, regulatory and soft law approaches to achieve the desired outcomes.
