Law 319 - Competition Law

(half unit in 2nd term))

Convenor

Angus MacCulloch

This course focuses on the Competition law in the UK and EC. Competition law is the mechanism through which the law intervenes in commercial markets where there is perceived to be 'market failure'. That market failure may occur, for example, because of market power held by a private enterprise or through the operation of a secret cartel. There are 4 main topics within the course: (i) the economic and theoretical basis for competition law; (ii) the control of abuse a dominant position; (iii) the control of cartels and anti-competitive agreements; and, (iv) the merger control system.
