Claudia Decimoterzo

Born of an Italian father and English Mother I have experienced a mixed culture environment since day one. Up until 18 years old I was educated in Italy then chose to get my law degree in England for its excellence and worldwide recognition. As businesses cross borders, international law builds bridges and there is the necessity for a strong legal framework to offer seamless quality advice to global clients. My admiration for the British legal system, and the fact that both the British and United States legal systems are the major influential ones governing international business transactions, convinced me to study a law degree in England. The course has encouraged me to look critically at both legal legislations and jurisprudence.

To be successful in this competitive field of today I believe it is necessary to be able to think laterally and present imaginative ways to solve a problem and Lancaster Law School's approach has greatly improved my skills in order to reach that goal.

The decision to study Law in a UK university required a fair bit of research and determination. I have chosen Lancaster because of the Law School's top research rating and the University's college system. Lancaster has a high number of International students and I love the great, diverse, social life it offers.

My favourite part of the degree is the moot exercise where I have to discuss a hypothetical case. I enjoy the research entailed and having to think of a different approach to win my case. It has really improved my advocacy skills and confidence and I enjoy competing. I also like the group debates and seminars where we are encouraged not just to take the law at face value but to question the law and be critical. I learn a lot from the research I do both in the library from legal cases and law journals, also on-line in preparation for these discussions. The group work has taught me to compromise with other people's ideas and ways, to learn from their knowledge and be open to suggestions. The academics are always supportive and approachable which has made it all the more satisfactory.
