International law of the sea, international environmental law and international dispute settlement

Sophia has a book forthcoming, titled; Dependent archipelagos in international law of the sea: Solutions and Developments (Martinus Nijhoff). This monograph examines the status of dependent archipelagos, both coastal and outlying, in the international law of the sea. It offers a thorough examination of the regime of straight baselines and the implications arising from their application to archipelagos. It further focuses on and analyses state practice in both coastal and outlying archipelagos, and assesses its compatibility with the Law of the Sea Convention. The law-creating impact of this practice upon the interpretation of the Law of the Sea Convention and the formation of customary international law is assessed with a view to reaching some conclusions with regard to new developments related to the status of dependent archipelagos in international law.

Sophia has also written a number of journal articles on her areas of research. Most recently, Sophia's article 'Civil and criminal liability as mechanisms for the prevention of oil marine pollution: the Erika case' has been published in the Review of European Community and International Environmental Law (2011) 20(3) 313-324. The complete list of Sophia's publications can be found on Sophia's research profile.
