Dr Ben MayfieldLecturer in Law Ben’s research interests lie in the area of land and property law. More specifically he focuses on access to land and legal history. Access to land and legal historyBen has published several articles on this research area, including: ‘Uncommon Confusion: Parallel Jurisprudence in Town and Village Green applications' (2012) Conveyancer and Property Lawyer, 76(1) pp. 55-65 (with Richard Austen-Baker) 'Reclaiming the Rural Artefact: The Role of Aesthetics, Environmentalism and Food Security in the Emergence of the Law on Open Access' (2010) Law and Humanities,4(2) pp. 251-273. Importance of research outside academiaImpacts on practitioners and professional services:A draft of Ben’s paper 'Reclaiming the Rural Artefact: The Role of Aesthetics, Environmentalism and Food Security in the Emergence of the Law on Open Access' was disseminated to chartered surveyors, local government officers and rural land and estate managers through a paper presented to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Rural Research Conference (ROOTS 2010) on 13th April 2010. A shorter draft of Ben’s paper 'Reclaiming the Rural Artefact: The Role of Aesthetics, Environmentalism and Food Security in the Emergence of the Law on Open Access' was published on the RICS’ website as ‘Access and Conservation: The Emergence of a new Political Concensus’. (see www.rics.org/site/script/download_info.aspx?fileID=8286&categoryID=703) Cited in case law:The article, 'Uncommon confusion: Parallel Jurisprudence in Town and Village Green Applications', which Ben co-authored with Dr Richard Austen-Baker, was cited and substantially quoted in advice given to Oxford County Council in a town/ village green registration application concerning Blackbird Leys Field.
