Professor David Sugarman on BBC Radio FourDate: 17 August 2011 Tune in to BBC Radio 4 for Voices from The Old Bailey, featuring Professor David Sugarman on the expert panel. This second four-part series presented by Amanda Vickery examines some of 18th century Britain's most dramatic court cases. Three experts are on hand to discuss the cases in context, including Professor of Law at Lancaster University, David Sugarman. Voices from the Old Bailey has run for the past four Wednesdays at 9.00am on BBC Radio 4 (repeated at 9.30pm) and is also available on iPlayer at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01380pf
Through court cases, we can hear the voices of the 18th century - thanks to the speedy court shorthand writers, everyone`s speech is recorded, from the posh to the poor. It`s the nearest thing we have to a tape recording of the past. All the cases discussed in the programme can be found in the Old Bailey online archive www.oldbaileyonline.org - a fully searchable edition of the largest body of texts detailing the lives of non-elite people ever published, containing 197,745 criminal trials held at London's central criminal court. This archive, which is free of charge for non-commercial use, also contains biographical details of approximately 2,500 men and women executed at Tyburn, and we use this information in the series. All the programmes in the series were recorded on location in eighteenth century buildings around London. Each programme includes contemporary ballads and gives listeners links to read the cases in full. Episode List Part 1. Riots, 27th July 9.00am/9.30pm Part 2.
