Details

  • This module provides: A series of case studies of diverse cultural organisations from the commercial and publicly-subsidised sectors, including visiting lectures from industry professionals.
  • An introduction to the major institutions, councils and bodies who fund, govern and assess the arts in the UK, and the political background and issues around cultural policy and arts funding.
  • An introduction to the wider cultural landscape of the UK, including the social contexts in which artists are employed or commissioned, including an exploration of the scenarios of arts in health, arts and regeneration, arts in education, arts in offender rehabilitation and so on, and the questions and debates these raise.
  • An introduction to conducting arts consultancies, developing a brief with a client, conducting a case study, and some basic methodologies for measuring cultural institutions against sets of commercial targets or social agendas (or both), and institutions own stated aims and objectives.

Aims and Outcomes

This module aims to:

  • To provide an understanding of cultural policy in the UK and the ways in which this impacts on artists and institutions in the creative industries
  • To provide knowledge of the social contexts in which artists work, and to develop confidence in discussing the complexities of the debates around current issues in the arts
  • To provide the skills with which to describe and frame art practice in the light of these issues and debates
  • To provide clear understanding of the distinctions between the commercial and subsidised sectors, and a range of strategies for working between both ecologies
  • To develop skills in developing a brief with a Creative Industries client in order to explore activity at an organisational level

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Describe and frame their own practice through the artistic and social imperatives to which it might respond
  • Understand the forms of accountability resulting variously from a purely subsidised art practice, to a commercial commission, to the social environments of education, health, regeneration or community arts practice
  • Present a detailed understanding of UK Cultural policy, the means by which it is disseminated and delivered, and how arts organisations are monitored and assessed. Show an awareness of the major debates in the arts, including those around censorship, access and participation, and of the issues of race equality and disability. Develop a consultancy brief with a client, establishing shared terms of reference, an appropriate reseach methodology and a means of making findings and recommendations
