Introduction to a screening of the newly released remastered version of the classic science fiction film, Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927). Like many films from the silent period, Metropolis has circulated in a variety of bowdlerized versions of uneven quality and with different soundtracks, and the original version is presumed to have been lost. However, this version of the film incorporates footage from a recently discovered print in Argentina and is the most complete version of the film available and features a new recording of the original orchestral score composed by Gottfried Huppertz. The result is a subtle, funny, sophisticated, fascinating and spectacular film that, for the first time, is completely coherent.
