I currently teach on first, second and third year studio courses, specialising in painting. I am also a supervisor on the LICA MA programme and havesupervised the 3rd year dissertation module.
Working primarily with drawing and painting, my aim is to explore the embodied experience of particular landscapes in which there is a sense of being 'on the edge', both physically and metaphysically. This interest has led me to some of the more remote parts of the British Isles, Iceland, Greenland, and Spitzbergen in the Svalbard Archipelago. The rhythm of walking and working is integral to my practice. Many of the projects I have undertaken have involved collaborating with scientists. That artists and scientists have different intentions for their research which respond to different disciplinary requirements promotes an enriching and fruitful dialogue. Having the opportunity to engage with a particular site as part of a shared activity brings the prospect of gaining different types of insight that is beneficial to my practice in that it provides a broader range of concepts and imagery for me to draw on. Specific research questions include:
What might studio based enquiry contribute to an awarenessand engagement with environment through and embodied response?
What new knowledge might be gained in collaborative partnerships between artists and scientists, and how might thatimpact on an interdisciplinary audience?
How might the methodologies of scientific practice translate into an expanded notion of art practice, and can this be reciprocal?
