Potential Doctoral Proposals
I would be interested in hearing from students wanting to write theses on any aspect of music and musical cultures after 1945, from historical, analytical or sociological perspectives. I have particular interests in the culture of New Music in West Germany and the music of Boulez, Cage, Ferneyhough, Lachenmann, Nono, Pousseur and Stockhausen.
Research Interests
I joined the staff at Lancaster in 2006, after completing my doctoral research on the Darmstadt New Music courses at the University of Cambridge and spending a year teaching in the Music Department of University College Cork in Ireland. At some point in between, I also taught school children about composing music with computers and, incongruously, worked as a headhunter in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry. My research interests are still mainly focused on Darmstadt and composers who have been associated with the courses there, especially the music of Pierre Boulez, Brian Ferneyhough, Helmut Lachenmann, Luigi Nono, Henri Pousseur and Karlheinz Stockhausen, as well as points of intersection and conflict between compositional trends in the United States and in Europe after World War II. I am also an active composer, and my string trio, ...ŕ son dernier soupir, was shortlisted by the Society for the Promotion of New Music. Other performances of my work have recently taken place in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Canada and the USA.
