Combined Schemes

Combined degrees offer you a chance to study two subjects equally. You can combine two LICA subjects or a LICA subject and Creative Writing, and combinations with subjects such as a language, History, Philosophy or English are also possible. Some combinations work particularly well since your study of one subject informs the other, e.g., being able to understand film from the perspective of sociology or philosophy.

Since all students take modules in more than one subject in their first year, switching between degree programmes is easy. If you take the right combination of modules, you can switch between a combined honours degree and a single honours degree, or the other way round, at the end of first year.

Two LICA Subjects

Do you enjoy more than one type of creative expression? Do you want to study more than one art discipline to a high level? LICA is perfect for you. The facilities are second to none. We have an award-winning multi-arts building with a variety of flexible spaces. We are one of very few highly ranked universities which teach a wide range of arts subjects together in one department. You will have the opportunity to work with students from other disciplines, and to do projects which combine different art forms.

We currently offer a BA (Hons) Creative Arts degree which allows students to combine two LICA subjects or a LICA subject and Creative Writing. We plan to replace this next year by named combined degrees (e.g. ‘BA (Hons) Fine Art and Music’) but the structure will not change.

Structure

In first year you will take a LICA-wide module on modernism in the arts which sets the context for developments across the arts in the twentieth century and gives you the theoretical tools to understand the links between art forms. You also take a module in each of your chosen disciplines, combining practice and theory.

In second year, you take the same core critical theory module as single-honours students, plus core modules in each of your disciplines. In third year there are further core modules in some subjects, and you will write a dissertation, giving you the opportunity to research in depth a topic of your choice. The remainder of your studies will be made up from the same options open to single honours students, including opportunities to enhance your employability through a work placement or through a third-year entrepreneurship module.

See the information about each subject to know more about the features and opportunities for study.

Typical Entry Requirements

A-levels: ABB. Depending on your choice of subjects you will also need to satisfy requirements set out below.

Art:

A portfolio of practical work is essential and should include imaginative, expressive and analytic as well as objective drawing.

Music:

You will need to be able to read music (such as evidenced by Music A-level or ABRSM Grade 5 Theory).

Theatre Studies:

You will need to show experience and practical ability in theatre skills. A-level Dance, Performing Arts or Drama and Theatre Studies is an advantage.

Give details of all of your arts activities in Section 8 of your UCAS application and indicate your first and second subject for study in Section 3 (as indicated in the UCAS Handbook).

With Creative Writing

We currently offer a BA (Hons) Creative Arts degree which allows students to combine a LICA subject with Creative Writing. We plan to replace this next year by named combined degrees (e.g. ‘BA (Hons) Creative Writing and Theatre Studies’) but the structure will not change.

Other Combinations

The general structure of all combined degrees is the same on the LICA side. For detailed information with respect to the other subject, see the web site of the appropriate department.

Structure

In your first year you will take modules in each of your main subjects. We recommend that students also take the LICA-wide module on modernism in the arts, because it is a good preparation for second year, but this is not compulsory. You can take a module in a third subject or sometimes a second module in your other subject if you wish.

In second year you will take a core module in your LICA subject and one or more options to make up half your studies. It is not essential for you to take the LICA-wide critical theory course, though it can be useful.

If you are taking a combination with a foreign language, you will spend your third year abroad. Music students can benefit from an Erasmus exchange programme established with the Université Lyon 2 in France.

In your final year (fourth year for students taking a combination with a language, third for others) you will again take half your modules in each subject. You usually write a dissertation in one or other of your subjects, giving you the opportunity to research in depth a topic of your choice.
