Aesthetics of the Natural Environment: A Study in Aesthetic Appreciation

Summary: This project examines a range of central problems in environmental aesthetics, including: aesthetic experience; nature, art and culture; theories of aesthetic appreciation of nature in the history of philosophy; the contemporary debate - cognitive v. non-cognitive aesthetic appreciation of nature; aesthetic judgments of nature; aesthetics, ethics and conservation. The main focus is to develop a philosophical model of aesthetic appreciation of nature, the 'situated aesthetic'. This model seeks to integrate both subjective and objective components of aesthetic appreciation, and draws its inspiration from the work of Immanuel Kant and Ronald Hepburn
