Brian Garvey (Lancaster University) on Ryle's The Concept of Mind
Gilbert Ryle's The Concept of Mind was the book that, for many people, put the final nail in the coffin of Cartesian dualism - that is, the view that the mind is made of a special non-physical 'soul stuff'. But it is not just important for that reason. It was one of the best demonstrations of a new way of doing philosophy, a way that consists in looking carefully at the language in which philosophical claims are made, and showing how that language can be misleading. Moreover, it remains relevant today as a challenge to ways of thinking about the mind that are still popular.
