Asian Religious Values and Social Justice

The Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion at Lancaster University invites you to a three day conference in late September to explore Asian religious and moral values in the context of contemporary debates regarding social justice and common good. We have invited scholars and religious leaders from India, China, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, USA, Canada, and those from the UK and EU to engage in an open discussion about the concept of social justice from viewpoints deriving in Asian religious, cultural and moral perspectives. Using the Nobel Prize laureate Amartya Sen's book, 'The Idea of Justice' (2009) as a starting point, the conference will address contemporary issues and debates regarding human rights, justice, peace, gender, environment, and common good. Whilst addressing these issues, the organisers hope to promote an active dialogue between Western liberal perspectives and traditional Asian perspectives that derives from their cultural, moral, religious and political traditions. We encourage paper and panel proposals from interested researchers at any stage of their careers.

· Dr Monica Lindberg Falk: Centre for South-East Asian Studies, Lund University, Sweden (Thailand, Gender, Buddhism and social justicein the wake of the tsunami)

· Prof Kishore Mahbubani, Department of Public Policy, National University of Singapore (Challenges to the human rights paradigm)

· Prof Sashi Motilal, Department of Philosophy, Delhi University, India (Human rights, gender and the environment)

· Prof Henry Rosemont, Brown University, USA (Confucian Values, Chinese religions)

· Prof Amita Singh, Centre for the Study of Law and Governance, Jawaharlal Nehru University, India (Environmental values and social justice,ecological approaches to reforms in India)

· Prof Xinzhong Yao, Department of Religious Studies, King's College, UK; President of the Confucian Academy of Hong Kong (Social Justice and Chinese moral values)

· Prof David Wessels, Sophia University, Japan (Can Politics Learn from Religions?)
