News and Events Forthcoming Events Latest News Events Archive News Archive	PPR Seminar - Necessity and Freedom Date: 1 February 2012 Time: 4.00-6.00 pm Venue: FASS MR3 Katerina Deligiorgi - Necessity and Freedom The paper has two overlapping aims: to examine the puzzling concept of arbitrium sensitivum liberum, which Kant attributes to human beings, and to defend a specific theory of freedom. The two aims are related because to understand the claims made on behalf of arbitrium sensitivum liberum requires that we are in position to answer the following two questions: (a) whether determinism is true and (b) whether freedom is to be understood causally. The paper answers both questions in the negative. The first part is devoted to analysing and evaluating certain familiar definitions of determinism. The second part applies the conclusions of the first part to the understanding of arbitrium sensitivum liberum. The paper concludes by allying freedom, understood as source, with necessity.
