What Limits to Religious Freedom?Date: 18 April 2012 Time: 5.30-7.00 pm Venue: Sixty One Whitehall, London SW1A 2ET Peter Jones, Maleiha Malik, Lisa Appignanesi No official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein. If there are any circumstances which permit an exception, they do not now occur to us.' Justice Jackson's famous ruling still resonates in the USA. But recent bans on veils and minarets, and rulings against individuals who refuse to perform civil marriages or let rooms to gay couples, suggest that Europe is moving in a different direction. Is religious freedom an absolute, or must there be limits - and if so, how do we draw the line?
