PPR471: Religion, Popular Culture and Cultural Studies

Objectives

Over the past decade or so there has been an explosion of interest in the relationship between religion and popular culture.  Following on from significant work done in the 1970s within the emerging discipline of cultural studies, scholars of religion began to analyse how religion and the sacred connect with the media and cultures of everyday life.  This module equips students with the tools necessary for reading and understanding this relationship.
Indicative syllabus outline:

  • Why study popular culture?
  • A history from Matthew Arnold to the present day.
  • Theories of the relationship between religion and popular culture
  • Evaluating popular culture?
  • Theology and popular culture
