PPR484:Pilgrimage

Objectives

The subject area of this module is the sites and locations across the globe that are widely regarded as pilgrimage sites or routes, the activities, experiences and thoughts of those who visit them and those who are involved with the promotion and upkeep of such routes and centres, and the meanings of such journeys and activities. The focus is world-wide in terms of focus on geography and traditions, with examples being drawn from Asia (but especially Japan and India), Europe, North and Latin America) and from Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Christian (predominantly Catholic) and 'non-denominational sites. While the main focus is on pilgrimage in the contemporary era, some emphasis is also be placed on historical issues as well.

Among the topics discussed in the module are:

  • Defining 'pilgrimage' in global contexts
  • Articulating the pilgrimage
  • Asceticism and the package tour
  • Geographies and landscapes in the framing of pilgrimage
  • Making pilgrimages
  • Secularised pilgrimages
  • Embedded in the everyday: pilgrimage, social structures, memorials to the dead. and ways of life.
  • Contests, conflicts and turbulence: pilgrimage as a means of division and political protest.
  • Pilgrimage in an age of secularisation and institutional religious decline.
  • Hiking, heritage and holidays: Pilgrimage centres as UNESCO World Heritage sites and pilgrimage routes as hiking trails and holiday destinations
