About Our Research

The Department has a strong, distinctive and exciting research culture. Our interdisciplinary research brings together scholars who work within and across the subject areas of Religious Studies, Philosophy, and Politics and International Relations. It is focused in the following four areas:

  • Religion and Society:with subfields in Religious change in modern Britain; Religion, popular culture and media; Gender and religion; Religious dynamics in India, Japan, Latin America, the Middle East, and South East Asia; New religious movements

  • Politics and Religion: with subfields in Violent conflicts and their ideological and religious dimensions; Security and peace-building; Democracy, capacity-building and religion; Religion and public life; Diaspora, migration and borders

  • Conceptual and Theoretical Issues: with subfields in Mind, self and subjectivity; Literature, genre and textual interpretation; Modernity and post-modernity; Space and place

  • Contemporary Ethical Debates: with subfields in Equalities issues including gender, economic justice, religious minorities and diversity; Issues in bioethics including new reproductive and genetic technologies, consent, health policy, well-being; Genocide
