Politics and International Relations Undergraduate Degree Structure
At Lancaster University the first year is called Part I and the second and third years make up Part II.
Part I students take three courses in different subjects. E.g., a single honours Politics student, as well as doing Part I Politics chooses two further courses either from within the department (i.e., Religious Studies; Philosophy; Ethics, Philosophy and Religion) or from a wide range of courses offered by other departments in the University.
Joint honours students (e.g., Politics and Philosophy) will be pre-enrolled onto two Part I courses (Politics; Philosophy) and choose one other. Triple honours students are pre-enrolled onto the three courses that make up their degree scheme.
Part I - First Year
In Part I students will study the core course POLI 100: Understanding Politics and Governance. This will lay the foundations for any future understanding of Politics and International Relations.
Part II - Second and Third Year
In the second and third year you choose which modules to study. All students must take the equivalent of 16 single term units (some courses are two-term) over the two years. Exactly how many of these modules are in Politics and International Relations will depend upon your degree scheme.
Single Honours Philosophy majors must study at least 12 Politics and International units. Up to 4 units can come from taking modules in one of the other “minor” subjects studied in Part I.
Joint honours must take at least 6 Politics and International Relations units (maximum 10) (with at least six from the other joint honour subject).
Triple honours must take at least 4 (maximum 8).
