Religious Studies Undergraduate Degree Structure

Part I

All students take the core course "Religions of the Modern World" This course will introduce you to four of the world’s major religious traditions, looking particularly at the diverse ways in which they answer some of the most fundamental questions arising from our experience of life. The course provides an outline of the growth and development of these traditions and their primary characteristics, and subsequently considers some of the various forms they take in the contemporary world The course concludes with a cross-cultural and inter-religious examination of some of the key issues for the study of religion in the modern world, such as ethics, politics, gender, and the character of religious life as it enters the twenty-first century.

In common with other Lancaster degree schemes, all students take two minor courses These may be courses offered within the department, namely, 'Philosophy', 'Politics', or 'Ethics, Philosophy and Religion.' Alternatively, students are free to choose minor courses offered by many other departments in the University.

Teaching time is one two hour lectures and a one hour seminar each week, supplemented by your own study, essay and project preparation time. The weekly workload is likely to be similar for the two ‘minor’ courses.

Part II

In your second and third years you will study the equivalent of 16 single term units (some courses are two-term) over the two years. Exactly how many are in RS will depend upon your degree scheme.

Single Honours Religious Studies majors study the equivalent of 12 RS units. Joint honours must take at least 6 RS units (maximum 10); triple honours must take at least 4 (maximum 8).

See Course Modules page for more details of Part II modules for specific degree schemes in Religious Studies.
