About Us

In the first National Student Survey, assessing student satisfaction at the end of their degree courses, Lancaster ranked no. 1 in the Northwest and no. 6 in the UK.  The Department was rated 5A in the Research Assessment Exercise (2001) and its teaching was rated 'Excellent' in the QAA exercise.

The Department of English and Creative Writing offers a range of practical approaches to writing fiction, poetry and scripts. All our teaching is workshop-based. Pieces of students' work-in-progress are circulated in advance and are discussed in detail with a workshop of fellow writers.

Our courses are designed primarily for apprentice and experienced writers wishing to develop their skills. We discuss and discover new ways of expressing our experiences, memories and visions. We welcome students from all disciplines in the University who wish to sharpen their reading powers and critical skills in order to achieve a more profound and precise understanding of the texts they will encounter.

We have no examinations, no set texts and no set topics. Our courses are demanding because we create - as closely as possible - the conditions under which professional writers work. From time to time each group may write together to a guideline suggested by the tutor, but this is the only prescription in our work. Our courses ask students to explore and develop their talent, finding ways to create their own artistic voice and vision. We offer advice on publication in books and magazines and in the broadcast media. The teaching staff are published, prize-winning writers across a spectrum of genres.
