Paul Farley
Reader in Poetry
Paul Farley studied at the Chelsea School of Art and has published three collections of poetry that have received widespread acclaim, including the Whitbread Poetry Award. He has held a Royal Literary Fund Fellowship, and from 2000-2002 he was writer-in-residence at The Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere. His work has been included in several major anthologies, including the US publication New British Poets (St Paul: Graywolf Press, 2004) and the landmark ecological project, Wild Reckoning (London: Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, 2004). He was one of the Next Generation Poets, showcasing the best new poets of the past decade, in 2005. New poems have recently appeared in the Times Literary Supplement and the London Review of Books, and he has written essays, reviews and criticism for The Guardian, Poetry Review, Art Review, as well as a column for TATE etc. He also regularly writes for radio (poetry, drama, documentary), is a regular on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Review, and occasionally presents The Verb, BBC Radio 3’s literary magazine programme. In late 2006 he is presenting BBC Radio 3’s Wilfred Owen season. He has judged the National Poetry Competition in 2003, in 2004 he was invited to join the panel judging the T.S Eliot Award, and in 2006 he co-judged the Foyle Young Poets of the year Award, Britain’s most prestigious poetry prize for young people. 2006 also sees the publication of a new collection of poems, Tramp in Flames, as well as a study of Terence Davies’s Distant Voices, Still Lives for the BFI’s Modern Classics series of monographs; he is also editing John Clare’s Selected Poems for Faber and Faber.
Paul is also featured on The Poetry Archive, the world’s premier online poetry database of poets’ recordings, launched in late 2005. He is also a member of the Management Committee for The British and Irish Contemporary Poetry Conference.
