English Literature Undergraduate Courses
Combined degrees: In addition to being part of combined degrees with English Literature, Creative Writing can also be combined with English Language or can be taken as part of a degree in Creative Arts.
The Department of English and Creative Writing offers a range of practical approaches to creative writing in any form. Much of our undergraduate teaching takes the form of workshops, in which students' work-in-progress discussed in detail with fellow writers in an atmosphere of mutual support and respect.
At Part One, students are introduced to key skills, techniques and concepts in Creative Writing through a series of lectures and themed-workshops, on subjects such as form, structure, character development, and dialogue. In Part Two, all teaching is workshop based. Part Two students also have the option of taking specialist modules in Poetry, The Short Story, Creative Non-Fiction and Longer Fiction.
Although many Creative Writing students are English Literature Majors, we welcome students from all disciplines in the University.
Our courses are demanding because we create - as closely as possible - the conditions under which professional writers work. We expect students to engage fully with the professional training offered by the Part One lecture strand, and to use the skills and knowledge gained there to develop their writing practice in Part Two. In doing so, students will equip themselves as writers, and be able to explore, experiment and develop their writing practice through their undergraduate years and beyond.
The teaching staff is made up of published, prize-winning writers across a spectrum of genres.
Examination is by portfolio.
