Born:

North Carolina, 1936

Early years:

He was oldest of four children.
He wrote stories at 5 years of age and taught himself to read.

Schooling:

Washington and Lee University (unfinished); Richmond Professional Institute (graduated); University of Washington, M.A in Far Eastern Studies.

Career:

His first book, Another Roadside Attraction was published in 1971. His second book, Even Cowgirls get the Blues, came out in 1976. The book was adapted for the screen in 1993 by Gus Van Sant (Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho), starring Uma Thurman.

Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas (1994) was Robbins's first book to make it onto the New York Times best-seller list.
