About the Ruskin Research Centre
We are a dedicated research centre that carries out research into John Ruskin and his circle, focussing on the uniquely comprehensive holdings of the Ruskin Library. We are the only specialised Ruskin research centre in the country and have the appointment of a large number of Honorary Professors and Visiting Research Fellows.
Stones of Venice Research Grants available
The Ruskin Library and Research Centre is pleased to announce small research grants available to students and early career researchers, to support a visit to Lancaster University. The visit will be specifically to use the Whitehouse Collection of material relating to John Ruskin (1819-1900) and his circle, housed in the Ruskin Library at Lancaster University. Applications will be judged on an individual basis and should include details about your Ruskin or related research.

The Grants have been donated through the Ruskin Foundation from donations by Sovereign Films in connection with their forthcoming film ‘Effie’ about Ruskin’s marriage.

Our Activities
The Ruskin Library
The Ruskin Library and its staff provide access to the collection of material housed there. Visit the Ruskin Library for information on The Collection and forthcoming exhibitions. If you wish to use the reading Room, please contact the Ruskin Library to make an appointment.
The Research Centre
The Research Centre has an office in County Main, alongside the Department of English & Creative Writing. Its activities include:
- Research Degrees and MA Opportunities
- An active Research culture
- A long-running and successful Research Seminar Programme
- Organising and contributing to conferences and events
- An established track record of Ruskinian publication
- Publication of our in-house journal The Ruskin Review and Bulletin that enjoys an international subscription and distribution to organisations across the world
- Organising the annual Mikimoto Memorial Ruskin Lecture
- The appointment of a large number of Honorary Professors and Visiting Research Fellows
- Maintaining links with the Ruskin Foundation, who are responsible for the care of the Ruskin Collection, and with Brantwood, Ruskin's home in the Lake District. The Foundation supports a diverse range of Ruskin-related activities
- Maintaining close links to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and other Departments across the University
