Introduction to Undergraduate study with the Department of Sociology

There are over 100 universities in the UK but Lancaster was rated in the top 5 in the most recent official UK Research Assessment. We were also rated with 'full confidence in the quality of our teaching' the highest category in the most recent official UK Teaching Quality Assessment.

The Department of Sociology at Lancaster is renowned for its innovative teaching, combining cutting edge work on sociological topics with new approaches from other disciplinary sources including Cultural Studies, Science Technology and Society (STS), and Women's Studies. Our aim is to make the learning experience exciting and challenging and we can achieve this because we only take 55 new undergraduates in each year. Much of our teaching is in small lectures, seminar groups of 10-15 students and interactive workshops.

Sociology is in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences which is also one of the strongest in the UK, offering you an excellent choice of related courses. We want the best undergraduate students to join us so we are looking for motivated, creative, critical and hardworking undergraduate students who want to do an inspiring degree which we hope will lead you into meaningful and satisfying jobs and enable you to make a real impact on the world.

We offer excellence in Sociology and Media and Cultural Studies and the area is beautiful too, close to the Lake District, a wonderful outdoors centre. The University is set in a campus with excellent and up to date facilities, including a brand new sports centre and quality student accommodation.
