Sociology Seminar Series information

This presentation will suggest that illuminated spaces and landscapes have been greatly neglected across the social sciences. The paper will focus on three themes, using Blackpool Illuminations as an example of an illuminated space: I will explore the contested tastes and identities that emerge in conflicts about the aesthetics of illumination, discuss the growing trend for city managers and designers to utilise lighting as a strategy for regeneration, and investigate the oneiric and affective qualities of luminescence.
