About the Department of SociologyStudying in Lancaster is special experienceWe're recognised internationally and in the UK as one of the best departments in the world. But more important is what we stand for: the sophisticated study of important contemporary topics and issues. Our students come from all over the world. We run a major MA programme and have around 70 PhD students. And our staff come from Australia, Canada, Denmark, India Singapore, the UK and the USA. There's a buzz in the department. We're excited by our research! And we work in a non-parochial way. Feminist theory, Media & Cultural studies, anthropology, science studies, geography and English literature are all represented in the department, and we've got close links with other departments in the university. So why would you come to Lancaster?We offer excellence in our field! But the area is beautiful too, close to the Lake District, a wonderful outdoors centre. And the University is set in a campus with excellent and up to date facilities. Undergraduate StudyIf you're thinking of a BA, then you'll be taught in one of the major centres of British sociology that encompasses our two degree schemes: Media & Cultural Studies and Sociology. We've recently rethought our undergraduate course, so you'll have a whole range of options, and you'll learn the essentials too - in lectures and small group seminars. Masters StudyIf you're thinking of an MA, then again you'll be studying in a department where Sociology and Media & Cultural Studies are actually being made by some of the best-known academics in the world. You'll have a choice of 'pathways' and options. Our system is flexible, so you can pick up options from other departments too. Studying for a PhDIf you're interested in a PhD, then you will be working in one of the best, most innovative sociological locations in the UK. You'll be able to plug into our seminars workshops and conferences, and you'll be part of a large and exciting international body of research students working both in sociology and in other related departments.
