Dr David Hansen-MillerDavid Hansen-Miller worked in Sociology until December 2007. Visiting Research Fellow Degree: B.A. (San Francisco State University), M.A. (University of Sussex), PhD (Queen Mary College, University of London) Research InterestsDr. David Hansen-Miller
David Hansen-Miller was a Lecturer in Sociology from 2005 to 2007 and then a Visiting Research Fellow in Sociology until 2009. Coming from an interdisciplinary background focused on historical sociology and cultural theory, he taught across a range of subjects while at Lancaster, including: social theory, representations of violence, media industries, and the sociology of globalisation. His academic research is generally concerned with the intersections between macro-social relations and the intimate, psychical experience of those relations. His book, Civilized Violence: Subjectivity, Gender and Popular Cinema, examines the manner in which spectators gain greater understanding of the embedded, and largely opaque, social relations of violence through their consumption of cinema violence. Civilized Violence was published by Ashgate at the end of 2011. After violence, his critical interest turned to psycho-social aspects of labour, in particular the global harmonisation of precarious work. He now works as a strategic researcher for the International Transport Workers' Federation in London where he does applied research informing campaigns.
