Professor John HughesEmeritus Professor Research InterestsProfessor John Hughes, graduated in 1963 with a degree in Moral and Political Philosophy, from the University of Birmingham, and moved to Lancaster University in 1970. In a long, interminable career, John Hughes has published in the fields of political socialization, political sociology, and research methods. His current interests, however, are in the field of Computer Supported Cooperative Work which involves ethnographic studies of work activities to inform system design and working with computer scientists at Lancaster. With Tom Rodden of the Computing Department he is collaborating on a number of projects, including VirtuOsi, Sycomt and COMIC, the latter an ESPRIT Basic Research Action in CSCW. John Hughes and Professor Ian Sommerville (Computing) have been awarded a prestigious 5-year EPSRC Platform Grant worth £400, 000. Platform grants are a new innovation in the EPSRC's Computer science research programme and are only awarded to research groups who have worked at an international level of excellence for several years. They supplement existing research grants and allow these groups to pursue adventurous, long-term research and to define their own research programme. The team plans to investigate new areas of work at the boundaries of computing and social sciences including the relationship between programming cultures and software quality and to investigate new areas of application of social analysis in software engineering. The grant will also fund a programme of international visitors to Lancaster. His other interests include Ethnomethology and Wittgenstein.
