Research Interests

I have spent a good deal of my adult life exploring the contours of modern genetic engineering. My first degree was in Genetics. However, my interest in the subject went beyond the natural sciences, and under the guidance of Peter Wheale I began my transformation into a social scientist, largely through the writing of Genetic Engineering: Catastrophe or Utopia?, the publication of which in 1988 coincided with the publication of a number of European draft directives on modern biotechnology. The latter drew us into providing critical analyses for the Greens of the European Parliament and DGXI of the European Commission, and also prompted me to take an MA in Socio-Legal Studies, before studying for a PhD in Science and Technology Studies. I also qualified to work in the secretariat of the European Parliament on science and technology assessment.

At this time I was largely working as a Director for Bio-Information (International) Limited, a company formed by Peter Wheale and myself. We also formed Yobbo Arts Company under the auspices of which we co-wrote, and I directed and performed in, Rat and Super Rat, a play about the nefarious uses of modern genetic engineering. We also made a film for BBC2 (a counterpoint to one made by Lewis Wolpert).

As a campaigner, I have worked with the Genetics Forum, Compassion in World Farming and the Gaia Foundation. The highlight was being invited by Nobel Prize winner Professor Sir Joseph Rotblatt to address the Royal Society, London, on patenting in biotechnology. Before joining CESAGen as a Senior Research Associate at Cardiff, I was a research fellow and then a lecturer at Brunel University where I was fortunate to have worked on projects with Mike Lynch, Steve Woolgar, Bruno Latour, Wiebe Bijker and Philippe Laredo. I also ran an ESRC Seminar Series with Alan Irwin.

My current research activities are the CESAGen Flagship Project on proteomics; sustainable technology transitions; 'eubionics'; and forensic DNA profiling.
